Your marketing strategy can make or break your business. You can have the best products or services in your niche, but if customers can’t find you or don’t resonate with what you have to say, they won’t spend their money. Now more than ever, with so much competition, you need to make sure your marketing is top-notch.
Many business owners (and even new marketing professionals) are making some critical marketing mistakes without even knowing it. We’re here to go over the top eight mistakes we see bring businesses down as well as how you can fix them. Read on to learn more!
1. Not Defining a Clear Target Audience
Who is the target audience for your products and services?
Many business owners will mistakenly (or perhaps ambitiously) say “everyone,” but in the vast majority of cases, this isn’t the right answer. Trying to market to every demographic with every piece of marketing material is a huge mistake. Customers won’t feel as though their unique needs are being spoken to, and that will result in fewer overall sales.
Instead, try to define exactly who is most likely to want or need what you have to offer. Once you do that, identify where those people are most likely to see your marketing materials and what they’re most likely to respond to. For example, a business targeting Gen Z consumers would likely spend more time and resources on influencer marketing on an app like TikTok.
A narrow target audience won’t limit you, it will help you customize and refine your tactics.
2. Failing to Track Performance
Whenever you adjust your marketing strategy or start a new campaign, you need to prepare to measure and track performance. If you don’t, you won’t know how well (or even if) your current strategy is working.
Set up analytics tools to track key metrics and adjust your strategy accordingly. Decide when you’re going to check in (weekly, monthly, quarterly, and so on) and make adjustments. It’s okay for a campaign to have a slow start or a lull as long as it still has a positive ROI. If you’re stagnating, or worse, losing business, it’s time to adjust.
3. Overemphasizing Sales Over Value
Customers are bombarded with sales pitches every day. 66% of consumers, as of 2023, want fewer marketing messages. When everything feels like an ad, the ads become less effective.
What are business owners and marketers to do? They need to create more value for consumers. It may seem counterproductive, but less overt advertising can actually result in more sales and more long-term customers.
Focus on marking yourself as a trustworthy brand. Provide educational and entertaining content that shows you’re at the top of your field. The customers will come.
4. Neglecting Social Media Engagement
When it comes to social media, are you a “post and go” type of user? When you’re running a business, this isn’t enough. Engagement is key, and for customers to continue engaging with you, you need to engage with them.
Remember that social media is just that–social. It’s a two-way conversation. Respond to customer comments and messages. If someone posts your products to their story or page, re-post their content. This goes a long way in building goodwill.
5. Failing to Repurpose Content
If you love the content you or your marketers make, why waste all of that effort by only posting it once? That content is completely reusable. But how do you do this without being repetitive?
Let’s say you have an excellent blog post that’s gotten plenty of views and provides ample value to readers. Not everyone is going to see your blog, so how do you reach a wider audience? Take key passages from the blog and create an infographic or slideshow for social media so you can get a wider reach.
6. Overlooking the Power of Storytelling
Many marketers and business owners have forgotten the fine art of storytelling. Your content may be an advertisement, but it can be so much more than that. If you want to connect to your audience on an emotional level, you have to tell them a story.
Use narratives to properly convey your brand’s values and mission. This is a “show, don’t tell” approach. Instead of simply telling customers what you want them to think, show them with testimonials, brand histories, and case studies to bring your brand to life.
7. Not Having a Clear Call-to-Action
You have a fantastic piece of content in front of you and you’re ready to post it. Wait! What exactly do you want to gain from it?
Don’t expect customers to do all of the heavy lifting. Tell them what to do. A clear CTA is essential for driving conversions and guiding your audience through the buyer’s journey. Make sure your CTAs are prominent and actionable.
Whether it’s buying a specific product or contacting your business for services, you need to let readers know what they should do next.
8. Refusing to Adapt to Change
The marketing landscape is constantly evolving. New social media platforms pop up, trends come and go, and even the way search engines rank websites changes over time. Stay flexible and adapt your strategy to keep up with changing trends and technologies.
Continue working with marketing professionals and continue your own personal marketing education to keep up with the changes. The landscape is too competitive for you to afford to fall behind.
